I took up quilting when the kids were little and running around my easel and paints and needing my constant attention. It was easier to put down a quilt hoop than my paintbrush.
When I create a quilt, I picture who it’s going to be for. I love to choose the colors, patterns, and textures that will be put together, sometimes drawing upon an object in the pattern of a fabric for the final design. I’ll even add embroidery and appliqué where needed. The quilt is designed to be loved to tatters.
Isn’t that just like painting a picture? Choosing your medium, color palette, subject, texture, size, patterns, and putting them together into something that evokes an emotional reaction? Whether it’s a kit, original design, or patterns that draw on centuries of quilting history, it’s still art.

I’ve always been interested in figurative art – art that uses recognizable
figures – human and otherwise. While my style in the past has been somewhat
realistic, I’m now exploring figurative work that, while still recognizable
as figurative, pushes to the edges of what’s real, loosens and strenghtens
the stroke, and simplifies the figure. As I’ve hit my 50s, I’ve
lost patience with the minutiae of fine strokes (although I wouldn’t
count out that style, either). I want to explore media and styles I haven’t
worked in before. I want to tell stories. I want to grow. I want to play.
Life is too short not to play.
In that light, keep coming back to see what I’m creating!
